scream out to be written about. This afternoon was one of them. I needed a new washer and dryer, except that I don’t buy things like that new, I buy recycled, refurbished, or recovered versions. Whether it’s a latent anti-consumerism or just that I’m cheap I can’t say for sure. In any case – I checked a couple of places out in my neighbourhood before going to a store a friend had recommended: Ameublements Elvis. With a porcelain Elvis bust in the window, and posters everywhere – there was no question I was going to buy them there! So I got a completely refurbished set in excellent condition (it looks new) for $350. The cheapest models at the department stores here start at $1000. Economy and Elvis, with same-day delivery.
Rhizome has just
released an alternate interface to some of their material: SPIRAL. It’s pretty cool, actually.
Busy at work
today dealing with some interesting stuff in the midst of more change around here. Not much commentary to come today, I’m afraid.
The first story
I’ve written for publication in a long time (I used to do quite a bit of freelance writing) is online now in Mindjack Magazine. It’s not an earthshattering treatise on the future of the world, but it was fun to get something out there regardless!
Inside.com is running
and excellent “this is where we are” story today about Napster and the labels. BTW, there’s no such thing as a secure file format. I’m no crypto genius or anything, but it’s pretty clear to me that someone could “deCSS-ify” any such format – because at some point, the file has to be decrypted to play. Open is open, and may be intercepted by another program that could copy it.
