Derek Powazek on copyright

September 13, 2000 by Michael Boyle

Derek Powazek on copyright. I share some of his uncertainty on this matter. Every writer, designer, artist, musician, programmer… well, everyone should be a little uncertain. Even if you think Napster is the cat’s ass (and I do), there’s no panacea here. There’s no technical system that pops us into an ethical new world in which ideas are shared on principle and credit is given as a matter of course.

Speaking of Aaron

September 12, 2000 by Michael Boyle

Speaking of Aaron, he, Ed, David and I are getting together for a beer tomorrow night after work, the third in an ongoing series (though we surely miss Heather who was still here for the first one). If there’s anyone else in Montreal reading this, you’re welcome to join us at around 6pm at the Dieu du Ciel pub (literally ‘god of heaven’) on Laurier near Clark.

The city I grew up in

September 12, 2000 by Michael Boyle

is profiled in Upside today. People are starting to take notice of Ottawa as a tech center. Everyone misses the story though. Ottawa isn’t just a johnny come lately – it has been a small but very significant player in the tech world for 30 years. It wasn’t by accident that pre-sale DEC manufactured their high-end processors there until the mid 90s. I know that voice mail as we know it today was at least partially invented in Ottawa. IBM has been doing (did?) research there (in association with the National Research Center) since the 60s. Whatever – it doesn’t really affect me cause there’s no web industry that I know of there.
