at the SXSW Web Awards? The Festival hasn’t updated its site with the news yet and I don’t see articles by any of the usual suspects. Hmmm.
Happy Tech-Downturn Day everyone!
Happy Tech-Downturn Day everyone! I’m celebrating by sitting in my bathrobe coding up for-fun projects waiting for a phone call. Oh, and I’m going to a hipster cafe in a while, which will doubtless be packed all afternoon.
I just sent this email
:
Hola,
A (late) “official” announcement about the next Montreal Weblog keepers get together! This is more or less the first anniversary of the night that Ed Bilodeau, David Petite, Aaron Cope, Heather Champ and myself got together, so it’s worthy of recognition.
And we do that with beer.
So the plan is this: meet on Sunday at 2pm at News Cafe, which is on St-Laurent at (I think it’s) Guilbault – at the corner of the tiny sidestreet between Bifteck and des Pins. It’s on the West side of the street and there’s food and coffee and stuff there. At a later time it is rather likely that we’ll move elsewhere for a quiet (or not so quiet) Sunday afternoon beer.
Please pass this along to anyone else (she or he should keep a weblog or other personal website) you feel should have been included in this email. And, on the day, if you have to get in touch with me, you can sms my phone through mikel.org and I’ll call you back.
So, prompted by such
pleasant folks as Zeldman, eric costello, and Owen Briggs, I’ve been experimenting extensively with CSS-only layouts. I started working on a new project, but decided that since it wasn’t “fixed” it was too easy just to change what I wanted to do if I couldn’t get something to go just how I wanted.
So I started converting this yellow monstrosity instead. With a model to work to, it brought a lot more discipline. In any case, I got the whole thing converted in no time flat (thanks to the people that are following this stuff closely and writing about it) – except for one thing – I can’t seem to pin the right hand yellow panel to the side of the browser window. As well, the three columns just end when they end – I can’t extend the left and right to the bottom of the browser window. I’ve tried every combination of margin: 0px and whatnot I can think of.
When I do get it together I think I’m going to move to the new style of code for this site. It’s much simpler, much smaller, more fluid and easier to work with. Even if NS 4 people can’t participate on an equal footing – I’m 90% sure it’s worth it.

Noted by boingboing: some important new research is taking place at Harvard in the I Can Eat Glass Project. The goal of the project: to list how to say, “I can eat glass, it does not hurt me” in as many different languages as possible. Warning: site features a truly horrifying bgimage.
