and they are proving to be an abusive company in a second way in addition to the basic sliminess of the “product” they shill. Joi Ito recently signed up for the incredibly abusive SMS.ac “service” – which immediately started spamming his contacts to try and get them to sign up as well. He tried to stop it, and in doing so realized what had happened – they took advantage of his expectations of legit sign-up forms and abused that trust. Since he’s a blogger, he wrote about the whole experience. Today Joi received a ridiculous cease and desist notice from SMS.ac’s lawyer, Kevin B Jones. So not only is the so-called service – which is really nothing more than a scam – abusive, but they’re busy trying to silence people who write about their experiences. Amazing.
Sad though not altogether shocking
news this morning that last night writer Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide at his ranch in Woody Creek, Colorado.
Four years ago,
Zeldman published his seminal article To Hell With Bad Browsers on A List Apart. Yesterday, Anil Dash wrote a nice tribute to the article and its effects on the web world.

Our Favorite Fonts of 2004. The comment about Auto: “The following confessions were found in an unnamed schoolgirl’s diary: -I think I want Auto 3 Italic to be my boyfriend. -Where in the rule books does it say that counters must be closed? Set them free, Auto 3! -I dreamt again of Auto, but this time its three brilliant and handsome creators were there. We all snuggled with a giant, furry swash ‘A’.”
I picked up my first
universal remote today – one of these: Logitech Harmony Universal Remote. The goal, of course, is to try to regain control over the proliferation of remotes on our coffee table, and I am pleased to report that it works very well and that programming the thing via the internet works and was a snap to complete. There are still some customizations that I want to implement, but you can cover the basics in a few minutes.
