Rep. Rick Boucher is taking on the music lobby. Interesting. Hope he makes some headway, at least in terms of educating people about the excesses of the DMCA.

Actually, I don’t know enough about the case to make that statement personally, though people I trust tell me that he should be freed. In any case, the latest news is that the death sentence of Abu-Jamal has been thrown out. At the very least, it looks like he won’t be killed under the cloud of uncertainty that has accompanied a seemingly over-dogged reliance on the strict letter of judicial procedure.

notes a story at CNN about pay raises in the US Congress.
The current state of politics in the US has me numb. I am no longer outraged at their ineptitude at prosecuting this undeclared war, and the levels to which they will sink as they (the Executive branch and Congress) capitalize on the “new realities” of wartime America.
It sickens me
that the US “law enforcement” community seems to be doing its utmost to capitalize on the events post-9/11 as much as they have been. They know people are scared and somewhat confused, and they are very deliberately rolling out plans that under different circumstances would engender howls of protest. The latest, of course, is the FBI’s Magic Lantern, which is nothing more than keystroke logging software that can be remotely installed. The generic category for such software is, “trojan horse” and such things are usually attempted by black-hat crackers.

: Seizing Dictatorial Power. “Misadvised by a frustrated and panic-stricken attorney general, a president of the United States has just assumed what amounts to dictatorial power to jail or execute aliens. Intimidated by terrorists and inflamed by a passion for rough justice, we are letting George W. Bush get away with the replacement of the American rule of law with military kangaroo courts.”
