to the May 29th entry over at Ed’s site, Blork Blog to read a very typical story about life here in Montreal. Even odder, Ed and I are very good friends now but in fact we first “met” online. We were both “founding” hosts at Cafe Utne. When he introduced himself in the private Hosts forum, I replied by saying, “I bet you $10 we have friends in common!” And of course we did, and our circles finally overlapped a couple of weeks later. But the overlap in the story on his site – that’s much deeper, and international to boot. Cool.

Paul Bausch, who makes onfocus, linked to this Spencer Tunik photograph today and mentioned that he didn’t, “think you’d get the same turnout in the US.” I don’t know about that, but there was an article in the Gazette about the shoot last Sunday in which his suspicions seem to be confirmed:
Tunick’s been arrested five times in his home town of New York City, including one charge of public lewdness and disorderly conduct…
I received an interesting
email yesterday:
This Friday May 18th, in an unprecedented gesture, the Union des crivains du Qubec will present an evening of ENGLISH poetry and literature in performance.
The show is entitled “Howls and Whispers (Souffles et hurlements)” and it highlights a remarkable cultural breakthrough that has occurred in the spoken word scene in Montreal.
Due to pioneer work by a list of names on both sides of the linguistic divide, the scene for performance literature has become a place where English and French performers know each other, work together and share an audience – an altogether amazing event when one considers that poetry is probably the most language-specific cultural activity one can find.
The show will feature a panoply of the most interesting writers and performers in the city, including Cat Kidd and jack beets, Fortner Anderson, and musician Tom Walsh – all in one of the best locations in town.
[ahem – I should have mentioned that location – it’s at the Lion D’Or, on Ontario St. E. Did you know that Ontario St had that name before the province of Ontario did?]
There’s a mysterious
story by Declan McCullagh at Wired News today: Journalists Protest Gag Order. Evidently it has something to do with a piece published on the Montreal indymedia site – but a gag order was served in Seattle. It’s all very confused now, but I’m curious to see what happens, if anything.
Yay
! I can reach caterina.net without going through a third party or getting a “not found” error or anything bad like that.
If only they could see how nice it is in Montreal now.
