There’s an interesting
article summarizing the current legal assault on linking in CNET today: “Hollywood looks to kill hyperlinks in copyright fights“.
At the end
of this article, the writer states that whether adding a hyperlink to a Usenet post archived by Deja consitutes a change to the text is a grey area. Huh? It’s clear that it does change the text, no? I’m glad I don’t bother with Usenet any more – I certainly wouldn’t want links to be added to my posts by a company who just scarfs up others’ posts and then uses them to drive traffic to the shopping part of their site.
I’ve seen references
to this story about British Telecom owning a patent on hyperlinks for a couple of days, but it was so ridiculous I never even followed the link. Anyhow, trust me, it is that ridiculous. I want Ted Nelson to sue BT now. Given the current penalties assessed hackers, he could sue them for 13.4 kajillion dollars, or pounds, or whatever.
