the Metafilter thread about Jakob Nielsen’s latest Alertbox article, but like Meg Hourihan I think I’ve mis-read Nielsen a bit, or misinterpreted him. And in my particular case I think I may have looked like an ass, although I stand by what I wrote there.
I’m not sure if
it’s a good thing or a bad thing that Paragraph Books has been sold to Quebecor. Paragraphe is the best English bookstore in Montreal (at least the best store selling new books), and until yesterday it was an independent bookstore. They practically invented the idea of having a cafe in the store at their old location on Mansfield – when I was at McGill I used to hang out there for hours at a time.
Behind the curtain
Behind the curtain: a day in the life of webloggers looks like a lot of fun. My name isn’t on the page of participants yet, but I’ve submitted the form and think this will be really cool to do, and to see once it’s ready to be viewed by the public. It’s been a while since I participated in a group activity of this sort. Actually, since the 24 Hours of Democracy thing years ago (I compiled 12 or 15 pages of essays for members of Cafe Utne), I don’t think I’ve done anything like it.
My friend MJ and I
, among others, have been jawing about Napster and mp3 in general for months, usually over beers at our local watering hole. MJ has put it together in a great story in Hour this week. Ironically, as I read the story I decided I had to listen to Neil Young’s Thrasher. So I grabbed it – took but a minute.
So the new machine
is home and all put together. I’ve been playing around with different things for a couple of hours now actually – the whole thing took less than an hour to get up to speed – software installed, the ATA drive from my old machine put in, video, SCSI, and more RAM installed, etc. What they say about G4s is true – the easiest case to crack of anything I’ve seen. It took me longer to open my old machine to grab the HD out of it – that was actually the most time consuming thing of all.
There is one problem though – my old old 2nd video card doesn’t seem to be working. It’s an old ATI VR card with just 4Mb of memory – but it should be enough to drive my second monitor. But alas it may not be compatible or something (which is a bit weird cause of course it fits in the damn PCI slot). Anyhow – should be solved soon.
