an election here so closely following the US election. And it’s funny that one of the things AP has released on the wire is a photo of a sample ballot.
The new Mike’s Message
The new Mike’s Message from Michael Moore is a great open letter to Al Gore. I still think I’d vote for Gore (if I could vote), but at the same time I have the same general feeling as Moore and would ask some of the same questions as Moore poses.
It’s funny – my attitude to the NDP in Canada is practically the opposite of my feelings about the Democratic Party in the US. Dems have moved, as has our Liberal Party, to the right – due to changing circumstances, a changing electorate, a new world that we live in. In doing so, parties like those represent me even less than they ever did – which was never that much. At the same time though, the NDP here hasn’t seemingly changed at all to face the different sort of world we live in now. And so they too don’t represent me – and in fact seem openly hostile to people in a situation such as mine. So if anything I’m even more screwed here than I would be in the US.
It’s funny but it’s
a very Eastern European day here today. More northern that the Balkans – more like the Baltics – but still. It’s drizzling and about 5 degrees here, which was exactly like it was during the entire time I spent in Latvia in December 94. And I got into work and there’s some leftover soft cheese and pat in the fridge that everyone’s digging into for breakfast – which was also what they served us in Latvia in the morning. Add some herring and grated carrots and the masquerade would be complete.
It’s funny – a month ago
I was sure that this design was one I’d stick with indefinitely. It works, it’s distinctive (more or less) and I’ve had a ton of great feedback on it from people I respect. But – is it the arrival of the fall? – lately I’ve been thinking of making a change. I’d appreciate suggestions!
It’s only recently
that I got a machine that could handle downloading mp3s en masse, but now that I have enough space on my HD I’ve had some funny surprises. I’ve been tending to look for stuff I had on vinyl back in the day. Today I made a great find – and old song called Ici les enfants by a relatively obscure band whose most interesting recordings were done in the late 70s/early 80s, the Monochrome Set.
At the time their albums were near-impossible to find, at least on this side of the Atlantic. It meant going to a good shop, first of all, which was relatively hard to find in Ottawa (I shopped at Shake Records for years; now Pete Besserer owns the Black Tomato restaurant in Ottawa and sells records there as well), and second it meant shelling out for an import.Subsequently, it turns out, the band stayed active for many many years – but in 1982, it meant one record, seen but once in any store.
