in Canada today. Jen Ditchburn (who I knew when she lived here in Montreal) reports that the privacy of personal data is to become a right that will be protected by law. The new law will apply pretty broadly too, it seems. Good news.
An interesting decision
today from the Canadian Supreme Court. It didn’t work to the favour of the people who had been acquitted of their charges, but today the Court clarified wiretap rules to be used in Canada. Judge LeBel said:
Wiretapping is highly intrusive and a judge should protect citizens against unwanted fishing expeditions by the state,” he said.
Police applying for such authority must show in documents they submit to the authorizing judge that “there is no other reasonable alternative method of investigation” under the circumstances.
He said he could
solve it in 15 minutes, and it looks like Vicente Fox is making good on his boast. I first got interested in the Zapatistas when I copy edited and layed out Ricardo Dominguez’s article in CTHEORY almost 5 years ago now. But I’m still pretty skeptical – things like anti-indigenous actions by a state are mostly institutional things, and it’s not clear that a political shift can really get to the root of the problem. At that, however, a political shift away from the PRI in Mexico is a bit more than switching governing parties in the US or Canada – it is a bit closer to the sort of systemic change that might really mean this thing could be solved in a reasonable manner.
It’s Election Day
It’s Election Day here in Canada. A low turnout is expected (which in Canada means about 65 to 70% of registered voters, with registration being an automatic process), probably because many people share the feelings that Ed outlines. I don’t share that view, although I will be holding my nose while I vote – all the candidates stink. But government does have a huge impact on every aspect of Canadian society – including the stock market and the economy at large.
This week marks
the opening of Nasdaq Canada, based right here in Montreal. I’ve heard and read a lot about it on the news, but I still can’t quite figure out what it’s going to be. I’m not sure that Nasdaq knows – will it just be a branch plant, a satellite trading floor? Or will it become a spin-off that companies can join like any other stock market?
