morning, but I’m already moving – specifically, I’m sitting in a conference room at a hotel here in Ottawa listening in on the Alternative Telecommunications Policy Forum. There are a lot of very strong thinkers and activists here – people whose names I’ve been hearing and whose papers I’ve been reading for years. I’ll be reporting back here with any findings I have in the next few hours.

Robert Bourassa Is Stealing My Street. On how bad an idea it is to rename Av du Parc / Park Avenue in Montreal to become Av Robert-Bourassa.
The Sunday Times
had a great story yesterday about the failure or Friendster: Wallflower at the Web Party. A great cautionary tale about any web startup and the importance of learning to walk before you try and run the marathon.
In other “gear” news,
last week I picked up a new MacBook, which has so far impressed me as a wonderful machine. One of the best keyboards I’ve ever used on a laptop (only my old Thinkpad I used for work a couple of jobs ago compared) and the bump in screen size from the iBook 12″ is just enough to make it workable for everyday use. I’ll probably get an external monitor to go with it later, but even by itself it’s great.
We’re drastically simplifying our whole “gear” life here in the house – Nadia is going to use the last-gen iBook we have and we’re getting rid of all our other computers – my Mini, her eMac, and my large old-school CRT that was still on my desk about 7 years since its purchase.
New from Palm:
the Treo 680 Smartphone in 4 tasty colours. Hope this one makes it to Rogers – and not at extortion pricing – more quickly than the 700 has gotten here. The 650 took ages to get here and then the price was (and is) insane. Rogers is totally missing the boat by not having an easier entry-point for these kinds of phone. I’m still using my 600 (and very happily) but I can’t justify an update at the prices they want.
