writers when I was doing my Master’s degree was Vine Deloria Jr., whose writings taught me many things about Indian identity and politics that were essential for my academic and personal development. I learned this morning that Vine Deloria died on Sunday in Golden, CO. Yet another truly original voice that shall be heard no more.

That’s a damn shame — my dad mentioned something last night about a fellow he knew who just died of an aneurysm. Musta been deloria.

25 years ago, I was in South Dakota and Floyd Westerman sang
for us, that was before he became an actor. One of this songs
was “Custer Died For Your Sins” which I always assumed was
titled after the Vine Deloria book of the same name.
And while it’s amusing to see Floyd doing those commercials,
now that he’s disappeared from them it’s easier to see those
commericals as silly, and likely worse. Without the legitimacy
of a real Lakota, it’s just someone cashing in on the name, and
having those people wearing feathers is awful.
