Jeremy Zawodny has written a great post about the switch from a device-centered world to a data-centered world: Where will you store your data? It’s something that theorists have talked about for ages, but as Jeremy notes, it’s really happening now. For my part, I have a memory stick, my iPod, and my Treo on me almost all the time, any of which can store lots of my stuff. Currently I don’t use the Treo or the iPod for file storage, but I’ve been reconsidering that. I also have a work laptop and my home computer holding tons of stuff, not to mention my hosting service and ISP. Managing that stuff is increasingly problematic. Which version of a particular file is authoritative? Sometimes I think that soon we’ll all be running all of our data through some sort of CVS that will synch everything up no matter where it is.
