Compare and contrast:
Annan speech to the UN and Bush speech to the UN. Bush persists in citing falsehoods; Annan cites plain realities. Bush looks back, to justify; Annan looks forward. I have always thought of Kofi Annan as a weak and ineffective UN Secretary General. But given the alternatives, he seems to have a real vision in the context of the very realpolitik UN.

Car Free Day in Montreal

Today
is Car Free Day in Canada. It’s being celebrated in Montreal by the closure of a chunk of the downtown core between 10am and 3:30pm, compared to Paris where four full arrondissements have been shut to traffic. But compare also with other Canadian cities, where (for the most part) they held street parties on Sunday – a far cry from shutting things down on a work day.
