A lot of what Anil says applies to Montreal, too. I’m surprised by the vitriol of his commenters that defend tract suburbs based on the ‘american lifestyle’ of drive-in convenience. In our adult lifetimes the economics of car-oriented development and Big Box retail (and the refinanced-to-the-nth-degree credit system) will completely collapse, and the only people who’ll have sustainable lives will either be in big cities or on the farm…
