the Day Without Weblogs. Today I’m getting out of the city for 48 hours. Back with more next week!
Archives for 2000
Gone!
I have removed the Weblog ad banner link thingie from the bottom of this site. If and when there have been speed problems with mikel.org, it has more often than not been related to the performance of that little feature… and it was holding things up too often for my taste.
There was a big
Quebec web and multimedia awards show last night at the Spectrum on Ste-Catherine at Bleury called Boomerangs 2000. Some of the winners are pretty interesting.
When I first heard
that one of my old heros, The Good Doctor Thompson, was going to be writing a column for ESPN I was very afraid. Afraid he’d lost his edge, or his sanity, or both. Afraid that he’d seem vaguely silly in the context of big money sports, out touch. That the man whose best conversations with Nixon were about the NFL was past his prime.
His first column pretty much confirmed this for me, but ever since he’s been much closer to regaining his stride. And in today’s column about the NFL, diminished talent pools, and the election I think he’s very close to being at the top of his game. It’s pretty subdued for HST, but pretty good nonetheless.
The Economist
The Economist printed a story about new telescope technology involving a mirror made of spinning liquid (instead of highly polished glass) that was largely pioneered here in Quebec. Which is great, and pretty interesting to read about. Best, though, is the opening graf:
ON THE face of it, a telescope with a liquid mirror sounds about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Heh. Those wacky Economist writers!
